Like most South African students, finding a place to live near campus meant the same routine every year: scattered posts in Facebook groups, phone numbers forwarded four times over, photos that didn't match the actual room, and landlords nobody could vouch for. Deposits changed hands over WhatsApp. Nobody had a way to check if a listing — or a landlord — was actually legitimate until they'd already arrived.
On the other side, landlords near universities were dealing with the same chaos in reverse: fielding messages from people who were never serious, with no way to verify who they were actually talking to, and no simple way to track rent, availability, or reviews without falling back on a spreadsheet.
StudentStay started as an attempt to fix that. I was struggling to find accommodation myself — chasing dead-end listings, messaging landlords who never replied, never quite sure who or what I could trust — and at some point the frustration turned into a question: why isn't there an app for this? Why are students still doing all of this by hand, every single year? That question is where the idea came from.
Not another listings board. A platform where every room is checked before it goes live, where landlords are verified before they can list, and where a booking request actually gets a straight answer — instead of disappearing into a group chat. Reviews are tied to real, completed stays. Rent is tracked in one place, for both sides.
We're currently onboarding our first landlords across South Africa, campus by campus, and building toward the same thing every step of the way: a room search that doesn't feel like a gamble.
All credit for turning that idea into something real goes to WKI (We Keep Ideas) — they took the concept and executed it end to end, building the platform that made StudentStay an actual product instead of just a frustration with nowhere to go.
The problem became too obvious to ignore, and the first sketch of StudentStay got written down.
Early conversations with landlords and students shaped what actually needed to exist — verification, real reviews, and a booking flow that doesn't rely on WhatsApp.
StudentStay is onboarding its first landlords across South Africa, with more campuses opening up as we go.
The people (and the help) behind StudentStay.
With thanks to the early landlords and students who tested StudentStay before it had a name, and to everyone who pointed out what was still broken.
